“Roof for People and Bicycles” Is an extension project of a rental office building.
In the beginning, the client concerned about the 26 years old decrepit RC structure, so They asked for an overall examination and opinions toward the present building situation.
Although we never found any fatal degradation in the present structure, we could not ignore the chaotic situation around the entrance. After a few meetings with our clients, we also realized that there is a plurality of companies these days are promoting the bicycle as a brand-new commute. Without structural support such as a roof or canopy, employees who come working on a rainy day with bicycle cannot take off their raincoat without getting wet before entering the building.
Our solution for these problems is using a 9mm thickness steel plate as the monolithic structure. The folded steel plate can serve as bicycle parking, canopy, and outdoor signage board. The 36φsteel rod which will only sustain the vertical force is paired evenly by two with the gap of 55mm. The 55mm gaps not only fit perfectly with a bicycle wheel, but it also helps bicycles to form orders when parking.
